I'm delighted to announce the immediate availability of DataTables 3 beta!

New features

Upgrade notes

Download builder

Examples

Detailed release notes

This is the result of the last six months of work (you might have noticed that the blog and other updates have been a little quiet - the work hasn't stopped in the background though!), which has involved a wide range of updates to DataTables core and its extensions. The key highlights are:

Dependency free - no more jQuery (although still fully compatible if you want to use it)

TypeScript / ESM-based code

Improved CSS variable support

Search and performance improvements

For all that it has been an intense six months of development for DataTables, you won't notice all that much difference in the UI it presents to the end user. There are some improvements, but this has been primarily about updating DataTables to be dependency free while making sure that the upgrade path is an easy one (in the majority of cases, it will be a drop-in replacement).

I don't normally release beta versions, but I think it is appropriate in this case due to the removal of the jQuery dependency. I would very warmly welcome feedback about this beta release. If you encounter any issues with v3 beta, please create a new thread and provide details of the issue. Equally, even if you don't have any issues with the upgrade, let me know! It is all useful data for rolling out v3 to production.

You might notice that most, but not all, of the extensions are available for DataTables 3 in beta form. Editor, SearchPanes and StateRestore are not yet available. Editor is nearly ready, but there are a few new features for Editor 3 that I've yet to complete - it will be released later in April.

Hope you enjoy this new release!

Hi all,

I just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who filled in the recent DataTables survey! I've had 341 survey results, and I'll take some time this week to compile the results, try to understand them and set a course for how to take DataTables forwards and to the next level. I'll write up a blog post with the results when done.

Also, just because the survey is over, doesn't mean you can't leave direct feedback. Post in the forum or drop me a message

I'm delighted to announce the release of DataTables 2.1! The first commit was made only a few days after 2.0 was released (four months ago!) and has been the primary focus for my development over the last month. It brings a number of refinements to DataTables, building on 2.0, and addresses a number of issues along the way.

2.1 is now generally available on the DataTables download builder and NPM.

There are several pieces of documentation for 2.1:

The jQuery team dropped the release of jQuery 4 beta today, which is a fantastic achievement. They've removed legacy methods and legacy browser support, reducing the size of the library while keeping the familar and concise API.

DataTables 2 (nearing release itself) works no problem with jQuery4 (example here), with all its unit tests passing. DataTables 1.13..8 and newer also work fine.

Before the inevitable question - there are no immediate plans to drop jQuery as a requirement for DataTables. I'll write more about this in future, but it would make DataTables as a library significantly larger and vastly increase the support and maintenance burden if I were to replace it. You don't need to write jQuery code at all to use DataTables, jQuery is just a dependency, and with jQuery 4 the dependency size, which was already small, has been reduced further.

Hi all,

For anyone following along with DataTable 2 development, you'll have noticed that I had initially said it would be released by the end of 2023, then January 2024. Unfortunately, it still isn't quite ready - DataTables 2 itself is ready to go, but there is documentation and packages to update as well as a few final tweaks for the extensions. I'm hopeful it will be ready for release soon, but I'll not release it until it is actually ready (no sense in releasing something that isn't ready to meet an arbitrary deadline!).

If you would like to try it out just now, the nightly builds contain DataTables 2 and all the latest updated for the extensions (some of which are also receiving major updates).

I'm delighted to announce two items that span across the entire DataTables ecosystem:

Dark mode! You might be using it on this site already, depending on your OS preferences. Dark mode is supported for both the DataTables default styling, and the recently released Bootstrap 5. Information about dark mode is available in the manual.

Vanilla JS code for the examples. You can now select between jQuery style initialisation, and VanillaJS (with ES6+ based code) for nearly all examples (except SearchBuilder and SearchPanes which are still to be done).

A selector for both dark mode and vanillaJS / jQuery based code is available in the top right (code style only on the example pages). Dark mode is also now fully supported on this and the Editor sites.

There are a lot of changes to make this possible, so it is possible I've missed the odd selector on the site - I'll likely be making tweaks over the next few days.

DataTables 1.13.5, Editor 2.2.0 and all of the extensions have been released today to support dark mode. The download builder and our npm packages are all up to date with these changes.

I'll be writing a blog post with more details in the next few days - until then, I hope you like the changes.

Hi all,

I'm delighted to announce the release of both Editor 2.1.0 and DataTables 1.13.2 today. Editor 2.1 is the cumulation of months of tweaks, features and fixes, and you'll be able to see from its release notes that the changes touch almost every part of the code base. Performance improvements for SearchPanes (which has also been updated to 2.1.1 today) when server-side processing is enabled, have been made for our three server-side platforms - PHP, .NET and Node.js.

The full release notes for Editor 2.1.0 are available here.

DataTables 1.13.2 is a smaller update, but includes the first use of CSS variables in DataTables - in this case to allow customisation of row selection colours (example here to turn the selected rows red), and also the ability to trigger events for tables which are not yet in the document's DOM.

Release notes for DataTables 1.13.2 are available here.

If you run into any questions with these latest releases, please open a new thread with details of the problem and a link to a test case, so individual issues can be correctly tracked and addressed.

As always, I hope you enjoy using DataTables!

Building on the
stateSave
initialisation option, StateRestore allows users to save multiple different states and restore them at any time, reverting the table back to how it was when the state was saved. You can also easily set which elements of DataTables are saved to a state on a state by state basis. There is a wide range of other options and examples showing what StateRestore can do.

The manual is available here including details on how to customise which elements of DataTables to save.

As always, we would welcome any feedback that you have! If you have any suggestions, please post them here. If you run into any issues, please let us know by creating a new thread with a test case, so we can keep track of individual issues.

Hi all,

I'm really pleased to announce the release of our latest plug-in for DataTables: FuzzySearch. Full details and examples are available in the blog post introducing the software, but basically it adds the ability to do fuzzy matching rather than exact matching in DataTables. For example search for "Tooyo" and it will still match "Tokyo".

Features include:

User ability to toggle between fuzzy and exact match searching (see this example)

Ability to search the matching threshold

Ability to show the search match score in a column.

This is the latest project Sandy has been working on (with more in the pipeline) and I'm really excited about this one - I think it is a fantastic addition to the DataTables suite, and might get an upgrade to being a first class extension for DataTables in future. It will land in CloudTables soon.

What do you think? How might you use it? What features have we missed? All feedback welcome .

Hi all,

It gives me great pleasure to announce the release of Editor 2! I have a detailed blog post about what is in Editor 2 and how to upgrade, but as a summary, the new features include:

DataTable as an input

Nested editing

Inline editing with multiple fields

Bootstrap 5 support

There are also a whole host of smaller features, tweaks and fixes. A full set of release notes are available.

In terms of upgrading, the process is the same as normal: upgrade your Javascript and CSS for Editor, along with the server-side libraries (if you are using our PHP, NodeJS or .NET libraries). Important If you are using the
datetime
input, you must now include the DateTime library, as it has been separated from Editor core to improve re-usability. This can easily be done on with the download builder by selecting the DateTime library. You should also be aware that legacy options have been removed in release, although most were deprecated way back in 1.3, so you are unlikely to be using them.

We've updated our licensing model a little as well - the pricing for Editor stays the same, and you will now receive one year of updates to the software from the time of purchase. The software will not expire after this time - you can continue using the latest version from that period of time, or you can select an upgrade package to continue receiving the latest upgrades without interruption. We offer a yearly subscription (with 20% discount on the upgrade package) to make this easier if you choose this option.

For anyone who purchased Editor in 2020 or 2021, you automatically receive a v2 license and one year of upgrades. If you purchased Editor prior to 2020, upgrade pricing will show up automatically on the purchase page when logged in with your original purchasing account.

I hope you all enjoy using Editor 2 as much as we have developing it!

It is with real pleasure that I introduce our latest software: CloudTables.

CloudTables builds upon DataTables, Editor and the rest of our software, presenting a quick and easy way for you to develop database applications through a web UI. You then embed the resulting table and editor directly into your own application giving a seamless interface to your own users.

As well as the ability to define your own databases CloudTables also has:

Live updates of data as others are editing

Full auditing - see what has changed and who made the change

Hosted - no need for potentially complex infrastructure

Easy data validation

CloudTables is in beta, so there are still features that we plan to add before a full release, but we are very keen to get feedback. If you'd like to give CloudTables a go, please do so! We also have video tutorials to help get started.

There is more detail of CloudTables available in this blog post including how we see it interacting with DataTables and Editor development moving forward.

Support for CloudTables is going to be primarily e-mail based rather than in these forums, but we do welcome feedback here if you'd like to post any here, or use the CloudTables contact option.

I'm delighted to announce the first release of our latest extension for DataTables: SearchBuilder.

SearchBuilder allows end users to quickly build up well structured search conditions so they can find data in a table based on the query they set up. You can also set up an initial query for them, define a query via the API and use state saving.

One thing SearchBuilder doesn't yet do is operate with server-side processing. That is something we will be looking to add into a future version.

SearchBuilder is available on our CDN via our download builder or direct file access, also on NPM / Yarn, NuGet, Composer and bower (see the download builder for details). The manual is available here including details on how to create your own plug-ins for custom search types, and a full set of examples are also available.

As always, feedback is most welcome! If you have any suggestions, please post them here. If you run into any issues, please post in a new thread with a test case, so we can keep track of individual issues.

Enjoy!

Hi all,

We experienced around six hours of forum downtime overnight (1.30am GMT to 7.30am 5th Nov 2020). During this time the forum was unavailable and login / registration for the site were also unavailable.

The error occurred due to an automatic upgrade of MairaDB which is incompatible with PHP 7.2 under certain configurations. Our database version has been rolled back (no data loss) until this is resolved. It looks like there will be a few sysadmins with headaches this morning from this!

We still believe the automatic upgrade policy is correct to ensure the system is patched and up to date, but we will be monitoring this.

Hi all,

I'm delighted to announce the release of SearchPanes 1.0. We have a detailed blog post about it, but as a quick summary, this is a project that has been Sandy's focus for the last three months and has been developed based on a prototype I made two years ago and asked for feedback from. The feedback has been wonderful, so thank you to everyone who has contributed!

SearchPanes is now a "first class" and fully supported extension for DataTables and is available on our CDN, the download builder and also npm. It also has full summary documentation including information on how to build your own custom pane filters and reference documentation for its options and API methods.

We hope you enjoy using this latest member of the DataTables family! Further feedback so we can continue to develop it is very welcome.

If you run into any questions while using SearchPanes, please post your questions in a new thread so we can keep track of individual issues and ensure they are addressed.

I'm delighted to say that our little family has grown with the addition of a little boy, born on Sunday morning. He's not coding yet, but we'll get him going on building the software first and then moved on to fixing some outstanding issues soon :-).

As a result might support responses over the next week or two might be somewhat slower that we've all come to expect - they might also be at random times (3am, etc), but I will be continuing to offer support for my products in the following priority order (and in reverse chronological order - i.e. older first):

Priority support

Editor license holders

Hello all,

One of my goals with DataTables 1.10 was to have it support external helper libraries such as Knockout. I've just put together a little demo showing DataTables using Knockout - rows are added to the table and removed automatically as the contents of the `observableArray` are altered, and the cells for existing items as their values are changed.

http://datatables.net/dev/knockout/

This makes use of the observable aspect of Knockout only, not templates as well.

This is my first effort of using Knockout, so I'm reaching out to all the Knockout experts out there. Firstly, what do you think, and secondly how can it be improved?

Many thanks,

Hi,

I have just published a little extension on GitHub here allowing the multi selection.

It appears that meanwhile a nice extension was published : Select

So I plan to rewrite my lib to use the Select extension.
Now you can select an area and use Ctrl to add a row to the current selection .
During the redesign I will add the Shift support and maybe improve the behavior of the area selection.

If you have any feedback you are very welcome :)

Hi all,

I'm delighted to announce a major update to the DataTables site, and almost all of the extensions for DataTables.

I've posted a summary of the changes in the blog, and I'm post more in the blog delving into some of the details of the new features and plug-ins in the coming days.

As a super quick summary:

Download builder

Full support for Bootstrap, Foundation and jQuery UI across all extensions

Editor 1.5 - Multi-row editing

New extensions:

Buttons - replaces TableTools' buttons and ColVis - HTML5 export!

Select - replaces TableTools' row selection options - much nicer API

RowReorder - new extension that does what the name suggests

Rewrites:

AutoFill - Fill rows and columns with like data with Editor integration

KeyTable - Spreadsheet like keyboard navigation for the table

FixedHeader - new drawing method

All extensions now require IE8+ or one of the evergreen browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari and Opera) and many require DataTables 1.10.8 which is also now available. A compatibility table shows the requirements and compatibility of extensions in detail.

Inevitably with such a complex release there will be issues. Please bare with me while I sort them out. If you do find any bugs, please open a new thread with details so we can track individual cases.

And with all that said, the most important thing is to enjoy the new software :-)

Hello all,

Its been a little while since my last general project update, so I thought I'd post a little bit of information here before the next major update.

Firstly, 1.10.8 will be released in the first week of August. I would encourage you to try it out the current nightly version (JS / CSS) in your apps / pages, and let me know of any issues you find so they can be addressed before the 1.10.8 release.

Next, I've been saying for about a month and a half now that the next major release of Editor (1.5) and various other supporting plug-ins is only 2 weeks away... This time it is true, alongside the DataTables 1.10.8 release I'll be introducing a number of other releases such as Editor 1.5, new version of AutoFill and KeyTable along with new extensions (Buttons, Select and RowReorder).

I'm extremely excited about these releases, can almost can't wait to get them out to you, but software without good examples and documentation is useless. It is this aspect, and the infrastructure for the software that has taken a bit longer than expected. To those who have read my previous posts about "ready in two weeks" my apologies. It will be worth the wait!

Once the releases are complete I'll be blogging in detail about the new features that are being introduced.

Regards,

Hi,

Just wanted to say that I've finally finished my column filter plugin for datatables.

It's called "Yet Another DataTables Column Filter" or in short "yadcf"

I started to develop it for my own use and at some point decided to release its as plugin...

Here a kickoff example: http://jsbin.com/esezof/1

Here the github page: https://github.com/vedmack/yadcf

And here some info about the features:

*Parsing various types of columns:

plain text
plain text with delimiter
one or more HTML elements with the ability to extract text / value / id from each HTML element

*CSS support:

each filter element has got a css style class , so its style can be easily overridden
Reset button for filter:
next to each filter a reset button will appear (this button allows the user to reset the filter)

*Filter in use visual notification:

when a certain filter is being used it will be highlighted (the color of highlight can easily be changed with css)

*Miscellaneous:

predefined data source for filter (array of strings)
ability to place the filter in an external html element (for example: inside a div element)
change the filter's default label (Select value, etc)
change the filter's reset button text (x, clear etc)

Usage example:
$(document).ready(function(){
$('#example').dataTable().yadcf([
{column_number : 0},
{column_number : 1, filter_container_id: "external_filter_container"},
{column_number : 2, data:["Yes","No"], filter_default_label: "Select Yes/No"},
{column_number : 3, text_data_delimiter: ",", filter_default_label: "Select value"},
{column_number : 4, column_data_type: "html", html_data_type: "text", filter_default_label: "Select tag"}]);
});
Hello all,

I'm very pleased to announce the release of Editor 1.4.0-beta.1, the second, and likely final beta before 1.4.0 final is released. As always the latest version of Editor can be downloaded form its download page. This is a free upgrade for all license holders (and everyone currently running a trial!), as will be 1.4.0 final.

This release focuses on rounding off the features for the new .NET libraries, including a new
MJoin
class for one-to-many joins, support for Azure databases, PostgreSQL and more. On the Javascript side the new
dependent()
method has been introduced which allows fields to be very easily linked with actions defined by user input. I'll be blogging about this in the near future as it is a powerful method that can be used in a number of different ways!

Full release notes (changes from the previous beta) are available on the Editor web-site.

Editor 1.4 is shaping up to be an exciting release, and any feedback you have from the beta will be warmly welcomed. If you run into any issues, please open a new thread so we can discuss and resolve each issue individually.

Hi all,

I'm really pleased to announce the release of DataTables 1.10.4. This is a minor update to DataTables with a number of bug fixes and can be downloaded from the downloads page and is also available on the CDN.

While 1.10.3 was a fairly large release, this edition of DataTables is just a small update to address the known issues. The two most significant changes are:

cell().invalidate()
and
cells().invalidate()
will now only invalidate the selected cells, rather than the whole row

The selectors for
rows()
,
columns()
and
cells()
all now work correctly with the
deferRender
option enabled, rather than throwing an error.

There are a few other fixes, and full release notes are available.

If you have any issues with the update to 1.10.4 please open a new thread with a full description of the issue and a link to a test case, to we can debug and track each individual issue.

Enjoy!

Dear friends,

I'm happy to announce that I have crated another add-on for the DataTables plugin - row reordering. This add-on enables you to reorder rows in the DataTable using Drag'n'Drop. Plugin is placed on http://jquery-datatables-row-reordering.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/index.html . You can find documentation on the wiki pages http://code.google.com/p/jquery-datatables-row-reordering/wiki/Index and live examples on http://jquery-datatables-row-reordering.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/index.html .

I have tested it in various cases and it works fine for me. I hope that you will find it useful too.

Best Regards,
Jovan
