Shorten Columns via php-substr in Server-Side PHP Script?

Is there a way to shorten easy a text-element in a column? It seems the php-file of the server-side-inclusion would be the best way, or? At the end at 'Output' a "substr" would be nice to implement. But I don't know how to handle the arrays. I'd like to shorten the 3rd sql-field (as it specified at the beginning in $aColumns). Could someone pls help me ?! Thx
