This example shows how the excellent open source Chart.js library can be integrated into your project along-side DataTables. In this case a simple doughnut chart is used to show the proportion of people in a specific office for the data in the table.
Furthermore, as you modify the table by filtering it, the chart is updated automatically to reflect the state of the table.
The data is obtained from the table using DataTables' column().data() method, combined with a search applied search modifier (DataTable.SelectorModifier) to ensure
that only data from the currently filtered data is read.

The JavaScript shown below is used to initialise the table shown in this example:
// Create DataTable
const table = new DataTable('#example');
// Create chart
let chartData = getChartData(table);
const chart = new Chart('demo-chart', {
type: 'doughnut',
title: {
text: 'Staff Count Per Office'
},
data: {
labels: Object.keys(chartData),
datasets: [
{
data: Object.values(chartData)
}
]
},
options: {
plugins: {
legend: {
position: 'right'
}
}
}
});
// On each draw, update the data in the chart
table.on('draw', function () {
chartData = getChartData(table);
chart.data.labels = Object.keys(chartData);
chart.data.datasets[0].data = Object.values(chartData);
chart.update();
});
function getChartData(table) {
var counts = {};
// Count the number of entries for each position
table
.column(2, {search: 'applied'})
.data()
.each(function (val) {
if (counts[val]) {
counts[val] += 1;
}
else {
counts[val] = 1;
}
});
return counts;
}
In addition to the above code, the following JavaScript library files are loaded for use in this example:
The HTML shown below is the raw HTML table element, before it has been enhanced by DataTables:
This example uses a little bit of additional CSS beyond what is loaded from the library files (below), in order to correctly display the table. The additional CSS used is shown below:
#demo-chart {
max-height: 300px;
margin-bottom: 2em;
}
The following CSS library files are loaded for use in this example to provide the styling of the table:
This table loads data by Ajax. The latest data that has been loaded is shown below. This data will update automatically as any additional data is loaded.
The script used to perform the server-side processing for this table is shown below. Please note that this is just an example script using PHP. Server-side processing scripts can be written in any language, using the protocol described in the DataTables documentation.
