I have the same issue, but the trailing comma is removed and my JSON data is valid. But when I run it on IE7, the screen is blank? It works great on Chrome and firefox. Any tips on what to look for?

I think you are the right track with option #3 to be honest, since it seems more flexible in the long run. The only concern I could see with it would be on slower machines the redraw might be notice
