Force Datatables to use pre-determined column widths

I have preset widths on my table cells - using the settings for DataTables in the example I expected these widths to be applied, and a horizonal scroll bar be presented. However, my settings appear to have no effect.

I have experimented with using table-layout:fixed in the css.
Using colgroup and col elements to set the column widths in the html


What am i doing wrong?
