Getting sort icon to appear immediately to the right of column header text

By default, it appears that the sort icon will float to the far right of a table header column. I understand that to change it to the far left of the column header, you just need to fiddle with a class so that you float left instead of right. But how do you get the sort icon to appear immediately to the right of the column header text, not all the way at the far right of the column?
