Uncaught TypeError: Cannot set property '_aData' of undefined

I'm getting the following error: TypeError: aData is undefined while using AJAX. I saw other threads on the forums dealing with this problem and the solution was to use "sAjaxDataProp": "", but that didn't fix my issue. What am I doing wrong?
