stateSave and ajax data object

I have recently changed my contacts page and to try and speed loading am using a datatable with an Ajax source returning an array of objects

Now I find that adding "stateSave": true has no effect

I am a bit confused as to what I need to do. Should stateSave still work with ajax ?
