stateSave and paging

I have a DataTable on a page that has a custom dropdown filter in the header. I have set stateSave to true and am using a custom function to reload that state. Most of the state is then reloaded from the base, however the paging location is not retained. I see the start and length parameters are properly set in the state data, but the table is not loading to that page. It's always to the start of the table.

Any pointers or references on how to handle this?
