How to set columns to only use min width

I have a number of control columns (select box, details, edit link..) that grow to take a lot of width when there are few other columns in the table. How do I ensure that these columns always stay at the min size necessary to display their text?

I'd prefer not to hard code values so that the text language can vary without screwing things up...
