Multi-column ordering: maintaining direction on non-primary column(s) when switching asc/desc

I'm doing a multi-column sort for column index 3 using columns.orderData with a value of [3, 0, 1] and it works as expected with an ascending sort. Clicking the column header to switch sorting direction unfortunately reverses the direction of 0 and 1 as well, which I don't want.

Is there a way of making the ascending direction stick for columns 0 and 1 even if the primary column 3 switches to descending? A few moments of research came up empty for this scenario.
