default search is unreliable

I have a very simple table showing data. one column has text, some of which are like:

1. Call: Customer Name - 6 months remaining. Financing on Vehicle due.
2. Letter: Customer Name - 12 months remaining on Lease (#123344).

If I just type financing in the search box, the filter does not get applied, that is, all other results do not get filtered out. If I then type " Financing ", the search filter will actually show this row as intended.
