Constant 'rank' column, irrespective of user's selected sort criteria

Hi, please forgive the newbie question.

I would like the first column of my table ('Rank') to remain "1", "2", "3", ... while allowing the user to select their own sort criteria on the remaining columns. So for example if my rows were countries, and I had columns for Population, Land Area, and GDP, the user could rank the countries by any one of those columns, with the 'Rank' column remaining constant.

Is this possible?
