DataTables in bootstrap modals

I have been unable to get any of my bootstrap tables that are within modals to load as a DataTable. I've tried variations from places like:

https://datatables.net/extensions/responsive/examples/display-types/bootstrap-modal.html

But none of these have worked. In the MVC View, the table is opened from an AJAX.ActionLink call, so that might be disrupting the ajax: in the javascript. I'm not sure.
