That thread contains a hack enabling complex leftJoins. Is it still the recommended approach?

    'fraid so. I've looked at formalising it somewhat, but it ended up being limiting in one regard or another, so I've kicked it down the road for now. That hack still works nicely and I don't plan to change that.
