Sure, you can control how paging looks.

I never finished this code but it does work and it does change the appearance so it should give you an ideal of how to achieve your results.

The way to do this is with a pagination plug-in. I don't think there is one that does exactly what you are looking for at the moment, but I'm sure you could modify one of the plug-ins available to do so.
