Rendering html with fnRender

Reading the documentation, it does not seem possible to return html from an fnRender function, or to write code that operates on the DOM to insert the data. Am I missing anything here? If not, I guess I see how to return a dummy, stack up the data, and than go back and do the modification.

I'm trying to represent an Object returned from a server as a button that pops up a dialog with the contents.
