Datatables Column Width Breaks After Filter

After filtering, columns defined by columnDefs widths resize to incorrect sizes. It looks like this has been an issue known for many years. What is the solution to this? Why has such an impactful issue been persistent for so many years without being addresses by DataTables developers?
