Its to keep the width of the text blocks in the forum readable. It has a max-width set and will collapse down for mobiles, but long lines of text in forum posts (or any other page) cause readability issues.
That said, yes, perhaps I could alter the design to make better use of the screen for wider horizontal displays. It just hasn't been important enough to sink development time into it over other things yet
