Dumb Editor Columns question

When using the editor alongside data table, does the editor configuration always have to have the same columns defined as the data table configuration? In the examples, it always seems to be the the case. However, I suspect it doesn't have to be. For some data tables I have a lot of hidden columns. But I only want to edit on a single column with the editor say column[8]. So do I define the editor with a single column with same name as DT col ?
