Placing the select tag in header for table filtering

Hi,
I have just started to use 'DataTables individual column filtering example (using select menus)'
in my application. Basically I want the filtering select boxes which are at the moment at the footer of table to be placed in header of table.
If I try to replace the tfoot with thead and create a empty th element there, it does not work.
Can any
one please tell me how to do it?
