Datatables uses an icon in the column heading for sorting. Is there similar functionality/addin for filtering. The idea would be that clicking the the filter icon would bring up an input box or dialog. This would save a lot of visual clutter and save a lot of space

    Not built into DataTables, but take a look at some of the third party column filtering libraries such as yadcf: http://datatables.net/forums/discussion/15016/yet-another-datatables-column-filter-yadcf
