The documentation for the sType option (http://www.datatables.net/usage/columns) gives a code example using an sType of currency, which implies that currency is one of the built-in default sType options (even though currency isn't listed as a possible value in the sType description.)
The currency sType is actually a sorting and type-detection plug-in available elsewhere on the datatables website, but somebody new to datatables wouldn't know that and would just assume they could use the example code as-is, and they would get frustrated when it didn't work!

Very good point - thank you for your post :-). I've just changed the example to use 'html' which is built-in, and also added a link to the plug-ins page: http://datatables.net/usage/columns#sType
