How do I add padding to a particular column?

Looking through the documentation, I have seen several references to different ways to handle padding. I have tried the suggested ways without any luck. Are there best practices in terms of padding columns, preventing columns from running into one another, etc.? The auto-width feature works pretty well, but I'm still ending up with columns running into each other (one column looking like a continuation of the one next to it). Thank you.
