DataTables and Editor for SharePoint
DataTables and Editor for SharePoint
I found DataTables two days ago and thought it would be great for a SharePoint application I'm making. I saw Editor and didn't realize it was a paid product 'til just now.
First, is there a perpetually free (perhaps limited) version I'm not seeing somewhere (fingers crossed)? I can't guarantee the number of developers that will technically be developing using the library. I'm only interested in the client side of the library (no server side assemblies), and using it via REST. I'm the only primary developer at this point, but SharePoint could give one sort of development access to any number of people that might contribute, therefore I have no idea what license to ask my employer to consider. Ideallyt, I'd also prefer not to go a long way into consideration just for things not to work out / be sufficient / approved for purchase.
Second, I'm wondering how the heck would they implement/enforce a licensing scheme on the CSS/JS version/portion (except possibly in a limited sense through obfuscation) - I'm guessing it's just the server side assemblies that would technically expire (?). I'm all for paying people for what they provide, but my situation is a teeny bit less than clear-cut and I'm hoping for anyone who's been through a similar mini-predicament to give me their story/recommendation.

No - Editor is a available as trial software for 15 days, but a license is required to continue using it after that time.
Technically it is impossible to do so. The source is included in the license and I don't make any attempt to hide that fact - I'm a developer myself of course and I wouldn't want to sell software with a license and conditions that I wouldn't accept myself!
The license is primarily a legal instrument. Limited access to unlicensed developers is one way it is enforced, as is no access to updated without a license.
Also a key point is that Editor sales is what makes continued development of both Editor and the rest of the DataTables software feasible! It is in part supporting the open source aspect of the project and helping to move that forward.
