Complex headers (colspan) with data driven tables

Hi everyone,

I have been searching the site for hours and I can't find any reference to this so please bear with me.

I have tables with their columns and data being fed to the front-end via ajax and the data is being placed into the table using the columns: option.

Now one of the requirements I have for this is to be able to group columns which I see you can do on the Complex Headers example. https://datatables.net/examples/basic_init/complex_header.html

I was wondering if there is any way to achieve this with data driven tables? And if so, what would the data structure need to be like?
