How to edit an empty field (responsive)?

If there an empty entry in the "hidden-columns area" I can't click in this blank field to edit it.
You can try it in the responsive example: https://editor.datatables.net/examples/inline-editing/responsive.html

If you decrease the Table to some columns are unvisible you only delete the 'salary' entry. After that it is not possible to choose the (now blank) "salary-field" again to edit it inline. Is there a way to fix it?
