The CSS for the DataTables Child Rows example (https://datatables.net/examples/api/row_details.html) shows the use of a PNG as a background image. I was looking to utilize a glyphic like in Bootstrap. What is the best approach?

You could use the ::before pseudo element with the content set to a suitable character point for the icon you want.
