Is it possible to sum a column

Hello
I am using Data tables and have not found a way to sum a column as of yet. I have the sql for the query I would like the display(echo) the total in the footer and have it change if a user filters the data to display the new total of the of the displayed column. I would appreciate any help or ideas on this matter. My current version of php is 5.42 and will be upgrading to php 7 in the future. Thank you in advance
