searching columns using Or logic

so I am trying to search on specific columns using an OR type of logic ( if this column contains a query value OR if this other column contains that value) as opposed to what I seem to be observing where it is filtering out results where the query is not found in all columns listed. Is there a way to do this or am I wasting my time?

It is quite possible, but you need to use a custom search plug-in to do it.
