I think that the datatables tools is very nicely documented. Does anyone know if it was created using some tool that is automated ins some sense ?

Thanks! It is semi-automated. The documentation is all written in an XML format (see an example here) when I then convert into static HTML pages for the site. So the documentation is written manually, but the way it is displayed on the site is automatic.
