Minimising the size of the sort button mouseover.

Hi,

I am trying to work out a solution to the responsive function when using a complex header structure.

I have discussed with my manager an option of merging the two header rows into one row with the main heading cells containing the Heading, Sort buttons from the first row and column search input from the second row in order to allow the search bar to drop off with the main heading cells on smaller devices. However, we have realised that the column sort mouseover is applied to the entire heading cell.

Is there a way to isolate and minimise the mouse overs scale to just be covering the pixels of the sorting button itself?

I can't provide a link unfortunately as the working demo is on a pre-production site.
