I raised a question a few years ago about using BCP 47 language tags for the various translations. (The issue has since been closed, which is why I've raised a new discussion.) I don't know if you've had any more thoughts about it?
If it's difficult, for backward compatibility reasons, to rename the files, it would still be a great help if the BCP 47 tag could be inserted somewhere in the file contents please, even initially just for any new translations. It would not only help developers, who just want to know what the language is, but would also help future updaters of the language files who might need to differentiate between versions of a language (eg fr-FR and fr-CA or de-DE and de-AT).

Yes! It is something that we are getting closer to doing - transnationing the files and the language information in general to something that is a little more friendly to use.
I don't know when we'll do it for certain, but it will probably be the next project that Sandy is working on.
